[Useless Sounds] is an occasional series, an informal presentation of unprocessed field-recordings. [Useless Sounds] began as low-profile way to share short unprocessed field-recordings I'd been making and archiving while I was living in Napoli, in the south of Italy. After returning to Montreal for the holidays in 2018 and doing some performances using some of my recent recordings, my friend and collaborator Stefan Christoff encouraged me to share weekly sonic updates while I was abroad.

Most of these recordings were made in 2019. The series installments feature recordings from Napoli, Rome, Beirut, Istanbul, Kuwait, Glasgow, Dublin, Milan, Siena, Marrakesh, Essaouira, and Montreal. There’s a definite Mediterranean emphasis, but not exclusively. Some of the recordings were made with binaural mics, others with a handheld digital TASCAM recorder, and still others on my phone.

After that year in the Mediterranean, my partner and I moved back to Montreal, pre-pandemic, and some of those sounds close off the end of the series.

The series will likely continue in some form in the future, but unlike many I haven't been inspired to document the minutiae of isolating in our apartment for the past two years. Still, there are some of those lockdown recordings from 2020 thrown in.

For now, I wanted to add this archive to Bandcamp.
